Assim aconteceu, e o Cristo Rei foi inaugurado em 1959 como um símbolo de gratidão e paz.

The idea emerged in 1934, but it was in 1940, during the Second World War, that the Portuguese bishops made a vow: if Portugal were spared from the conflict, they would erect a monument in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. That is exactly what happened, and the Cristo Rei was inaugurated in 1959 as a symbol of gratitude and peace.
