This map highlights the longest straight-line distance you can travel entirely over land on Earth.
The route begins near Jinjiang in southeastern China and stretches all the way to Sagres in southwestern Portugal. Along the way, it passes through 15 different countries, crossing vast deserts, mountain ranges, and plains without ever touching an ocean. In total, this continuous land path measures about 11,241 kilometers.
At first glance on a flat map, the route appears slightly curved. But that’s because Earth is a sphere. The true shortest path between two points on a globe follows what’s called a “great circle,” which creates this arc shape when projected onto a flat surface.
