This painting, housed in the National Museum of Serbia and dated to 1595, depicts one of the most gruesome realities of Ottoman rule in the Balkans: Serbian Orthodox Bishop Vrsac Teodor being skinned alive by Turkish soldiers.
This was not an isolated act of cruelty, it was deliberate, systematic Ottoman policy.
Christians throughout the Balkans who refused to convert to Islam were routinely subjected to the most horrific tortures: flaying alive, impalement, beheading, burning at the stake, slow dismemberment, or being sawn in half. The purpose was crystal clear: terrorize the Christian population into submission, force mass conversions, or eliminate those who resisted.
The Muslims of Bosnia and Kosovo today?
They are overwhelmingly descendants of Serbs, Croats, and other Slavic Christians who were forcibly converted under centuries of Ottoman oppression. Their ancestors faced the sword, the whip, rape, enslavement, forced marriage, child abduction (devshirme system that stole Christian boys to turn them into Janissaries), or exactly this kind of torture until they either converted to survive or were killed.
This is not “peaceful spread of religion.”

Esta pintura, que se encontra no Museu Nacional da Sérvia e data de 1595, retrata uma das realidades mais cruéis do domínio otomano nos Balcãs: o bispo ortodoxo sérvio Vrsac Teodor sendo esfolado vivo por soldados turcos.
Este não foi um ato isolado de crueldade, mas sim uma política otomana deliberada e sistemática.
Os cristãos em toda a região dos Balcãs que se recusavam a converter-se ao Islão eram rotineiramente submetidos às torturas mais horríveis: esfolamento vivo, empalamento, decapitação, queima na fogueira, desmembramento lento ou serragem ao meio. O objetivo era cristalino: aterrorizar a população cristã para subjugá-la, forçar conversões em massa ou eliminar aqueles que resistissem.

* Os janízaros (do turco Yeniçeri, "nova força/soldado") constituíam a elite da infantaria do exército Otomano entre o séc. XIV e XIX. Eram soldados escravizados, originalmente raptados de famílias cristãs nos Balcãs (devshirme), convertidos ao Islão e treinados com disciplina rigorosa para lealdade absoluta ao sultão, atuando também como guarda pessoal.
